Remote marriage licenses now available in Tarrant County, TX

Published Monday, Oct. 17th, 2022

Getting married in Fort Worth and other Tarrant County locations just got a lot easier

Learn about a recent update to Tarrant County marriage license laws

Couples who want to get married in Tarrant County, Texas, can now apply for their marriage license online with the help of video conference technology.

Starting today, couples will no longer need to leave home to apply for a Tarrant County marriage license. Officials say the new remote application process will make the marriage process easier for members of the military, and any other couples who prefer not to apply in-person at the clerk’s office.

Tarrent County is home to over two million residents, from the dense urban centers of Fort Worth, Arlington, and Grand Prarie, to smaller cities and towns like Euless, Bedford, Azle, and North Richland Hills. For many couples, a long drive to a local clerk's office has added unnecessary stress to wedding planning -- but no longer.

To apply for a license remotely, couples will need to complete the online marriage license application, linked on the County Clerk’s Office website. Both parties must then appear before the clerk via video conference, provide proof of their age and identity, and complete an Affidavit of Age and Identity form.

A Texas marriage license can be used in any county in the state following the required 72-hour waiting period. (This waiting period can be waived in some cases.)

Virtual marriage services like these first became available as part of emergency legislation passed during the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic, when local offices were closed to the public. They remain a popular and important accommodation for members of the military, immunocompromised and elderly adults, disabled adults, and busy couples who cannot easily schedule an in-person appointment.

Tarrant County's online marriage application process was made possible by legislation passed in Spring of 2021 (SB 907). Updates were slated for September 1, 2022, and went into effect on October 17th, 2022.
