4 Things to Never Mention in a Wedding Ceremony

Having done over 850 wedding ceremonies and because we do pretty much all non-religious to very lightly religious ones, there are certain words/topics we would never use in our ceremonies because they just wouldn’t fit the couples that we are marrying.   However, religion or other traditions are not what I am referring to because although they wouldn’t fit our couples, they might fit others.   The words/topics I am referring to are listed below.

  1. Divorce – yes, I understand that plenty of couples end up divorced, and I understand some of those divorces are messy, but this is not something that ever needs to be mentioned in any way during a wedding ceremony.
  2. Sex – yes, I understand that plenty of couples met thinking it would be a one night stand or said I love you after a great night of sex but these stories, or anything else related to sex, are not something that ever needs to be mentioned in any way during a wedding ceremony.
  3. Family Issues – yes, I understand that plenty of couples have crazy family dynamics and although it may seem humorous or poignant when talking about the couple’s personal story, it is not something that ever needs to be mentioned in any way during a wedding ceremony.
  4. Personal Issues – yes, I understand that the couple may have drug problems they worked through, or had a baby before they were married, or spent time in prison, and I understand that these also may seem humorous or poignant when talking about the couple’s personal story, yet, it is not something that should ever be mentioned in any way during a wedding ceremony.

We use the average grandma rule which basically says that if the average grandma wouldn’t want to hear it, then don’t say it.  Even if you are the couples best friend, brother, sister, or crazy uncle and even if you have the couple’s permission, just don’t say it.  The ceremony is a time to talk about tradition and love and hope and friendship…the toasts are the time to embarrass the couple, if you are into that sort of thing.
